Recently, West China College of Stomatology successfully conducted a total temporomandibular joint (TMJ) replacement surgery, the first in the southwest region of China, and become the second hospital ever conducted this type of surgery following Shanghai 9th People’s Hospital.

        Total TMJ replacement is the last chance for patients with the problems of severe temporomandibular pain or mouth opening limitation to cure the disease. Up to date, the TMJ products invented by Biomet Microfixation, for which our company is the sole agent in Chine, is the only one device supporting this surgery.

        June 02, 2010 Professor Hu Jing from West China College of Stomatology performed this surgery on a 46-year-old female patient diagnosed of temporomandibular tumor. This patient has had pain opening mouth for one year and has tried acupuncture, physical therapy and local blocking, all without apparent effect. The pain recurred frequently during the period and the mouth opening problem became more serious with mouth opening width decreased to 20mm. Through examination, the patient was diagnosed of left temporomandibular joint tumor. The tumor has grown for one year and invaded the left condyle and articular disc. Upon the condition of this patient, Professor Hu Jing decided to perform the TMJ replacement surgery.

        Biomet Microfixation’s TMJ prosthesis were implanted and the surgery won a complete success. After a short period of recovery the patient’s temporomandibular joint resumed normal function.

        The success of this surgery is absolutely good news to patients in the southwest of Chine with temporomandibular joint problems bringing them hope of resuming normal life and health.
